I just love my new Sherlock-inspired coat! Not that it actually looks like the original, I just wanted to make a black winter coat, probably with something red on it and in any case it should have a really warm collar to protect me from the bad weather habits of Berlin’s winter – just that we hadn’t such a bad one this year…. [click here for english text] Ich finde ja, dass es ein Beweis für kontinuierlichen Qualitätsverlust in der Kleiderindustrie ist, wenn Menschen bereit sind, sich selbst Mäntel oder Jacken zu nähen! Das ist nämlich in meinen Augen nicht gerade einfach. Wenn das Teil hinterher tragbar sein soll, muss man schon viel Geduld und Nerven mitbringen. Nicht, dass Nähen mir keinen Spaß macht – ich liebe es – aber trotzdem bevorzuge ich Projekte, bei denen sich gut abschätzen lässt, wie lange ich dafür brauche. Ein Kleid z.B. nimmt je nach Aufwand 2-3 Nachmittage in Anspruch, während ich für einen Mantel mal locker das Doppelte und noch mehr rechnen kann. Mein Problem dabei ist, dass ich alle Materialien hin- und wieder wegräumen muss, wenn mein Arbeitszimmer auch in den Nähpausen nutz- und begehbar bleiben soll; hinzu kommt, dass man ja nun nicht jeden Tag die Freizeit hat, sich an den Nähtisch zu setzen, also brauche ich für einen Mantel um die 3 Wochen. Spätestens in der dritten jedoch, möchte ich was anderes nähen, etwas, das auch fertig wird, sonst verliere ich die Nerven.
Wie auch immer… wie man sieht, ist es ja fertig geworden, mein Übergangsmäntelchen in edler schwarzer Schurwolle. Die wunderschönen Knöpfe sind Mitbringsel aus Shanghai, dem Himmel für Knopfliebhaber – einer kostete umgerechnet 1, 5 Cent 😉
Den Schnitt für den Mantel habe ich aus einer alten Burda Moden, genauer aus dem Heft 2/1970, S. 6.
I think that it is proof for the fall of High-Street Fashion when people are ready to sew their own coats or jackets! Why? Well, me for one, I need about 3 weeks (with rests that is) to finish a properly lined coat. The problem isn’t that I don’t like sewing itself, I don’t like the necessarity of keeping my working space useable – not only for sewing but all the other things I make (e.g. my job… LOL!). So I need to tidy every day after still not having finished my coat, just to spread everything out again some days later. By the third week or so, I am really fed up with coat making – big time! – and I just want to sew something that I can wear after another day. Know what I mean? ACK!
Anyway, as you can see, I finished the piece and hell, I love it! Especially the buttons as you can imagine. They are from a trip to Shanghai 2 years ago and were about approx. 1,5 Euro cent each. BUTTON HEAVEN!!!
The pattern is from Burda Moden Germany 2/1970, page 6.
